How to Keep a Shed Warm and Dry in Winter

What winter cold and damp really do to a shed and its contents (rusting tools, frost-killed paint and glue, ice inside the roof, struggling pets and plants), and the fixes in the right order: draughts, insulation, the right heater and a frost-stat strategy.

Cold on its own rarely wrecks a shed. Cold plus damp wrecks everything: it rusts tools overnight, splits tins of paint, freezes glue into a useless curd, grows mould on anything fabric and forms sheets of ice on the inside of the roof that rain back down in the thaw. Warming a shed properly is therefore two jobs, not one. First you make it dry and tight, then you add just enough heat, in the right form, for what the building actually does. This guide goes through both jobs in order, from free fixes to a properly heated garden room.

The one-line version

Fix leaks and keep a trickle of airflow, seal the draughts, insulate what you can, then hold storage sheds at 3 to 5°C with a tube heater on a frost stat, and only heat to room temperature once the building is insulated. Never run portable gas in a sealed shed.

What Winter Actually Damages

Knowing what is at risk tells you how warm the shed actually needs to be, which is the difference between pennies and pounds on the meter.

Tools: the rust cycle

Steel in a shed rusts in winter through a repeating cycle: cold nights chill the metal far below the daytime air temperature, then milder damp air arrives and condenses directly onto every cold surface. A cast-iron saw table can be visibly wet by mid-morning without a drop of rain. Repeat that thirty times between November and February and chisels pit, planes seize and the saw table grows an orange bloom. Paint, glue, fillers and sealants

Water-based products die at 0°C. One hard freeze can split PVA wood glue permanently (it thaws into a lumpy curd that never bonds properly again), curdle emulsion, and ruin water-based wood treatments, and the freeze-thaw cycling of a typical winter finishes off whatever a single freeze does not. Solvent cans survive the cold better but their shelf life still suffers. If the shed is not kept frost-free, the honest advice is simple: the paint shelf winters indoors.

The building itself

Winter timber swells with moisture: doors stick, sliding bolts stop lining up, and cladding that dried and shrank in August closes up again, sometimes trapping water in joints where frost can then work it apart. Overhead, warm moist air from any heat source condenses and freezes on the underside of a cold roof, and that ice sheet melts in the thaw and rains onto whatever is stored below, which is regularly mistaken for a leak. Batteries and electronics

Lithium batteries must not be charged below 0°C; charging a frozen pack causes permanent internal damage even though it appears to work. Capacity also drops sharply in the cold, which is why the e-bike that manages twenty miles in June struggles in January. Store and charge batteries indoors in winter, or at least in an insulated cabinet in the shed (more on that below). Electronics with screens and hard drives dislike condensation more than cold: let them acclimatise before powering up a device that has spent a freezing night outside.

Plants

A shed is a common overwintering spot for pelargoniums, fuchsias, dahlia tubers, citrus and the contents of an emptied greenhouse. Most of these want cool but frost-free, which is exactly the 3 to 5°C the frost-stat strategy below delivers. What kills them is either a hard freeze in an unheated shed or, just as often, rot in still damp air, which is another argument for keeping a trickle of ventilation even in January.

Pets and animals

Rabbits and guinea pigs are often moved into sheds for winter, and done well it is far better than a exposed hutch. Done badly it swaps wind chill for damp air. Animals need the shed dry, draught-free at floor level but still ventilated higher up, bedding deep and off the cold floor, and water checked because bottles freeze fast in an unheated building. Guinea pigs in particular should not sit below about 5°C for long. A max/min thermometer beside the hutch removes the guesswork.

People

If the shed is a garden office, a gym or a pub shed, none of the storage compromises apply: you need real warmth, and real warmth in an uninsulated single-skin building is money poured through the walls. Dry First, Warm Second

Heating a damp shed makes it damper: warm air picks up moisture from the wet floor and timbers, then dumps it as condensation on every cold surface the heat has not reached. So before any heater:

  • Fix the water routes. Roof covering sound, cladding shedding water, no soil or compost heaped against the walls, base draining freely. The five routes water takes into a shed, and the fix for each, are covered in the waterproofing guide.
  • Get air under it. A shed on a proper base with airflow beneath dries from below; one sitting on wet ground wicks moisture up all winter. Our foundation guide covers bearers and clearance.
  • Keep a trickle of ventilation. Sealing a shed completely traps moisture inside it. Leave high-level vents open even in winter; the heat you lose through a small vent is far cheaper than the rot you avoid.

Draughtproofing: the Best Pound You Will Spend

In a small building, draughts move more heat than the walls do. A 5mm gap around a shed door is effectively a hole the size of a house brick with the wind blowing through it. The fixes are cheap and quick:

  • Doors: self-adhesive foam or rubber seal on the stops, a brush strip along the bottom, and adjust the hinges or catch so the door actually compresses the seal.
  • Windows: foam seal on opening casements; clear silicone bead around fixed glazing that rattles. Our guide to shed windows and doors covers refitting anything past saving.
  • Eaves and corners: sheds ventilate at the eaves by design, so do not foam them shut; instead make sure the gaps are the ones you chose (meshed vents) rather than random daylight through warped boards. Expanding foam is for gaps around cable and pipe entries, not for the ventilation the building needs.
  • The floor: a rubber-backed mat or offcut of carpet in the working area takes the chill radiating from the boards and is the cheapest comfort upgrade a workshop gets.

Insulation: Where Warm Becomes Affordable

Draughtproofing keeps the heat you make; insulation makes the heat worth making. An uninsulated shed loses heat so fast that any heater is running near constantly, while even 25mm to 50mm of PIR behind a lining changes the building's character completely: it holds warmth between heater cycles, its surfaces stay warmer so condensation largely stops, and the daily temperature swings that drive the rust cycle flatten out.

The priority order for winter matches the summer one: roof first (heat rises into it), then walls, then floor. Choosing a Heater

Match the heater to the job, not the other way round.

The pattern worth noticing: electric resistance heat is the right answer for almost every shed because it is dry heat with precise control. The two exceptions are the properly installed wood stove at one end and, for genuinely lived-in garden rooms with mains power, an air-to-air heat pump (a small split-system air conditioner run in reverse), which delivers two to three times the heat per unit of electricity but only earns its install cost in a well-insulated, frequently used room.

The Frost-Stat Strategy

Most sheds do not need to be warm; they need to never freeze, which is a different and far cheaper target. The recipe:

  • A tube heater sized to the shed (a 60W tube suits a draughtproofed 6x4; an 8x6 might take 120W, or two tubes at opposite ends).
  • A frost-stat thermostat plug set around 4°C, so the heater only draws power on the nights that actually threaten a freeze.
  • Mounted low on the wall, because the coldest air pools at the floor, with clearance from anything stored above it.
  • A max/min thermometer so you can see whether the setup held the line after a cold snap, rather than guessing.

Through a typical British winter this runs for a few hundred hours in total and holds the shed at 3 to 5°C: paint safe, glue safe, tubers and tender plants safe, condensation sharply reduced because the air never sits at the dew point for long. It is the highest-value heating arrangement a storage shed can have.

Heat the Contents, Not the Building

Cheaper still than warming the shed is warming only what the cold would hurt:

  • An insulated cabinet: an old kitchen cupboard lined with 25mm PIR offcuts, warmed by a 15W to 45W mini tube heater, keeps paint, glue, sealants and batteries frost-free for a fraction of the cost of heating the room they sit in.
  • Tool care beats tool heating: a wipe of camellia oil or a silicone cloth on bare steel, blades waxed, and cast surfaces covered with a breathable cloth (never plastic sheet, which traps condensation against the metal) will carry a tool collection through winter in an unheated shed.
  • Desiccants have a place: rechargeable silica tubs inside toolboxes and drawers protect enclosed spaces well. They cannot dry a whole leaky shed and are not meant to.
  • Some things just come indoors: e-bike and power tool batteries, delicate finishes, instruments and anything electronic with a screen. Two minutes of carrying beats any heater.

Getting Power Out There

Everything above except the wood stove assumes electricity. A proper outdoor supply means armoured (SWA) cable, RCD protection and a competent or certified installation, because garden electrics fall under Part P of the Building Regulations. An extension lead through a window is not a winter solution: connections corrode, leads get pinched, and RCD protection is often absent exactly where dampness makes it essential. Safety: the Non-Negotiables

Heaters and small timber buildings

No portable gas or paraffin in a sealed shed: water vapour plus carbon monoxide risk. Keep every heater clear of sawdust, shavings, fuel and stored fabric, and never drape anything over one to dry. Fan heaters and workshops full of dust are a bad pair. Wood stoves need a proper hearth, flue and clearances, plus a CO alarm. And any mains heater left unattended should be a sealed, thermostat-controlled type (tube or oil-filled), on an RCD-protected circuit.

What is the cheapest way to keep a shed frost-free?

Should I heat my shed all winter?

Heat to what the contents need. Storage wants 3 to 5°C, not room temperature. For an occupied room, insulate first; heating an uninsulated shed to 20°C is the most expensive thing you can do with it.

Can paint and glue be ruined by freezing in a shed?

Yes. One hard freeze can permanently ruin PVA glue and emulsion paint, and repeated freeze-thaw finishes off fillers, sealants and water-based treatments. Keep them frost-free or bring them indoors.

Is a gas heater safe in a shed?

Portable gas is a poor choice: it soaks the shed in water vapour and carries a carbon monoxide risk in a small sealed space. Use electric heat, or a properly installed wood stove with a flue for off-grid buildings.
