UK Shed Brands Compared: Prices vs Quality
Compare Shire, Mercia, Rowlinson, Yardmaster, Lotus, Palram, Suncast and Lifetime sheds by price, build quality, guarantees and buyer fit for UK gardens.
The best shed brand is not the one with the loudest guarantee or the prettiest product photo. It is the one whose wall, roof, floor and treatment match the job you need it to do. A £300 timber shed can be sensible tool storage, while a £2,000 plastic building can be a poor choice if you want to hang heavy tools or keep a valuable bike secure.
Prices we checked in November 2026 put the mainstream brands into a useful pattern. Wooden sheds cover the widest range, from roughly £310 for a typical 6 x 4 Mercia to about £616 for a typical 8 x 6 Shire. Metal is often cheaper at the same footprint, while premium resin costs more because it brings low maintenance and a built-in floor. The quality gap is real, but it usually comes from specification, not the badge on the door.
Choose Shire or Mercia when you want breadth and a conventional timber building. Choose Rowlinson for a straightforward middle-ground range. Yardmaster is the sensible metal starting point; Lotus is the value play. Palram Canopia is the light, easy plastic option, while Suncast and Lifetime sit higher when you want thicker resin construction and more internal features.

Quick comparison
The table is a price-positioning guide, not a promise that every model follows the middle of its range. Prices were checked in November 2026 and are typical snapshots, excluding delivery.
| Brand | Material | Position | Best at | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shire | Wood | Mid to premium | Range breadth and workshops | Annual treatment is part of ownership |
| Mercia | Wood | Budget to mid | Choice of overlap, shiplap and log buildings | Compare treatment and wall build model by model |
| Rowlinson | Wood and metal | Budget to mid | Simple, familiar storage sizes | Do not assume a timber guarantee from one range applies to another |
| Yardmaster | Metal | Budget to mid | Galvanised steel storage with long rust cover | Assembly and anchoring still decide the result |
| Lotus | Metal | Budget | Low entry price | Check panel thickness, floor support and lock details |
| Palram Canopia | Plastic | Mid | Low-upkeep resin and daylight features | Plastic is not a security material |
| Suncast | Plastic | Mid to premium | Multi-wall resin and useful layouts | Accessories and shelves can be extra |
| Lifetime | Plastic | Premium | Steel-reinforced, double-wall construction | Budget for a padlock |
In the prices we checked in November 2026, the median price per square metre is about £128 for Mercia wooden sheds, £159 for Shire and £162 for Rowlinson. For metal it is £80 for Rowlinson, £91 for Yardmaster and £131 for Lotus. Plastic ranges from £153 for Palram Canopia to £246 for Suncast and £264 for Lifetime. Those are useful signals, but they do not make a £/m² score: floor, frame, doors and treatment are not interchangeable.
What actually separates a cheap shed from a good one
Ignore the lifestyle photograph and find the technical specification. Start with the wall. Overlap boards are economical and can be right for a mower and a few pots. Shiplap closes the joint more neatly. Tongue-and-groove gives the tightest interlock. The profile alone is not enough: 12 mm boards and 19 mm boards do not make the same wall, and a strong wall on a weak frame is still a weak building.

- Frame and bearers. Check framing dimensions, spacing and whether the floor sits on pressure-treated bearers. A floor that stays dry and supported matters more than a decorative finish.
- Treatment. Dip treatment is an initial preservative coat, not a maintenance-free promise. Mercia says its dip-treated buildings need preservative and waterproof treatment after installation and annually thereafter. Shire likewise says annual treatment is essential to keep its 10-year anti-rot warranty. Pressure treatment changes the maintenance timetable, but still read the exact guarantee.
- Roof and floor sheets. OSB, solid timber and tongue-and-groove boards each have different stiffness and moisture behaviour. Confirm what is included, and do not confuse a felt roof covering with a thick roof deck.
- Doors and fixings. Look at the door frame, hinges, hasp or lock point, threshold and whether the doors are braced. For bikes or power tools, add an independent ground anchor and a proper lock. A shed label that says security is not the same as a tested security building.
- Base and anchoring. Every material needs a level, load-bearing base. Metal and plastic are light enough to move in a strong wind if you skip anchoring. Timber absorbs trouble from standing water, so clearance under the floor is part of the specification.
- Guarantee wording. A 15-year anti-rot guarantee is not a 15-year guarantee against a stuck door, storm damage or a roof leak. Read what is covered, what treatment is required, and whether assembly on the wrong base voids it.
Use our wooden shed range and filter by shiplap or overlap. Then compare floor, framing and treatment before you compare the price.
Wooden shed brands
Wood gives you the warmest appearance and the easiest route to a workbench, shelves, insulation or a new window. It also asks the most of you. Even a well-made timber building needs a dry base and a treatment plan.
Shire
Shire has the broadest range position here, from small overlap stores to 44 mm log cabins and workshops. In November 2026 its typical 6 x 4 wooden shed sat around £399, while its typical 8 x 6 was around £616. That spread tells you to compare the model, not just the brand name. Shire says the majority of buildings arrive with a factory base coat and recommends a high-quality preservative before assembly and at least annually afterwards. Pick Shire when you want many layouts, a workshop path or a named range with more than one timber thickness. Start with wooden sheds and then inspect the exact product sheet.
Mercia
Mercia is the budget-to-mid range workhorse. Its November 2026 median was around £310 for 6 x 4 and £440 for 8 x 6, with overlap, shiplap and 19 mm, 28 mm and 44 mm log products in the range. The value is strongest when you want a conventional shed and are happy to do the maintenance. Mercia offers a 10-year anti-rot guarantee on dip-treated buildings and a 15-year anti-rot guarantee on pressure-treated buildings, with treatment conditions attached. Choose it when floor area and choice matter more than premium hardware.
Rowlinson
Rowlinson sits in the practical middle, but it spans more than timber. Its typical 6 x 4 wooden shed was around £500 and its typical 8 x 6 around £667 in November 2026, while its metal equivalents were around £187 and £369. That makes it a useful brand for comparing material rather than assuming one construction standard. Its Premier and Security timber lines deserve a closer look if you want shiplap, while the Trentvale metal range is about straightforward storage. Use the 6 x 4 range when footprint is the main constraint.
Other wooden names
Forest Garden is the clearest extra name to know if treatment and guarantee language are central to your decision: its own guide distinguishes annual re-treatment for dip-treated products from pressure-treated products that do not require annual re-treatment, and says its 4Life sheds have a 25-year anti-rot guarantee. Waltons is a familiar budget choice, but treat each specification separately. BillyOh gives you a large spread of timber styles and sizes. Power Sheds is worth considering when panel-based delivery and layout flexibility matter. Dunster House covers timber buildings from sheds towards insulated garden rooms, so compare it with a workshop rather than a simple store. None of those names is a reason to skip the same checks on base, frame and treatment.
Metal shed brands
Metal wins when you want storage that will not rot and you are willing to accept a more industrial look. The good versions are galvanised and coated, but a thin budget panel can still flex, dent and rattle. Build on a firm, level base and anchor the frame before loading it.
Yardmaster
Yardmaster is the strongest value argument in the metal group. Its median price was around £260 for a 6 x 4 in November 2026, and the manufacturer describes its sheds as hot-dip galvanised steel with a 15-year anti-rust guarantee. That guarantee covers an undamaged panel perforated by rust, not every form of damage. Yardmaster suits ordinary garden tools, especially if you want to spend less on the shell and more on anchoring, a floor support frame and a decent lock.
Lotus
Lotus has a wider metal footprint than its price might suggest, from compact pent sheds to 10 x 8 models. Its typical 6 x 4 was around £300 and its 8 x 6 around £400 in November 2026. That puts it above Rowlinson and Yardmaster on the median price per square metre, so check what the extra buys in the exact model: panel gauge, floor support, vents, door bracing and coating. Lotus is the sensible shortlist option when colour and footprint matter, but it is not automatically the more substantial shed.
Other metal names
Asgard is the specialist name to investigate when bike security is the main job, not general garden storage. Biohort is the premium benchmark: its UK material describes galvanised, polyamide enamel-coated steel, a 20-year corrosion guarantee and storm resistance up to 150 km/h when professionally assembled and anchored. That is a different proposition from a low-cost ribbed shed. Match the spend to what is inside.
Plastic shed brands
Plastic is the calmest choice for a damp garden or an owner who does not want to paint and treat timber. It is not automatically flimsy. Look for resin wall construction, steel reinforcement, a proper floor and UV protection, then be realistic about security and how much you can fix to the walls.
Palram Canopia
Palram Canopia is the accessible middle of the plastic group. Its typical 6 x 4 was around £355 and its 8 x 6 around £535 in November 2026. Its Skylight range is designed around low maintenance, a rigid frame and daylight. The Skylight manual says anchoring the shed to the ground is required for the warranty to be valid. Choose it for low-value storage in a wet or shaded garden, especially when you want a brighter interior. The plastic shed range is the right starting point for comparing sizes.
Suncast
Suncast sits higher in the range, with a typical plastic price per square metre around £246 and a typical 10 x 8 around £1,699. Its official product information describes multi-wall resin panels, water resistance, UV protection and a 10-year limited warranty. The appeal is a more finished interior and better support for shelves than the cheapest resin boxes. Check the accessory list: the product page may show a shelf-compatible layout without including every shelf.
Lifetime
Lifetime is the premium plastic comparison. Its median price per square metre was around £264 in November 2026, and its 8 x 10 example uses dual-wall HDPE, a powder-coated steel-reinforced frame, a slip-resistant floor and UV protection under a 10-year limited warranty. This is the plastic brand to consider when you want a heavier, more rigid building with lockable steel-reinforced doors. The doors have exterior padlock latches, with the lock not included, so budget for a padlock. It still needs a proper foundation.
Other plastic names
Keter is the broad mainstream name outside the brands compared here and covers everything from small resin stores to larger sheds. Look closely at wall construction, floor inclusion and UV wording rather than assuming the family name tells you the build. For every plastic building, keep expectations clear: good resin can resist weather and cleaning, but a determined thief can cut or lever it more easily than a purpose-built steel security shed.

Which brand for which buyer
- Tight budget: Start with Mercia overlap timber or Yardmaster metal. Spend first on a sound base and anchoring; a cheaper shed built correctly is better value than a dearer shed on damp soil.
- Security for bikes: Look beyond ordinary shed labels. Consider Asgard or a purpose-built security model, then check the lock, hinges, anchor and your insurance conditions.
- Long life with no maintenance: Choose galvanised metal if the look suits your garden. Choose Lifetime or Suncast plastic if you also want a built-in floor and resin walls. Biohort is the premium metal step-up.
- A shed you will work in: Choose timber, especially a Shire or Mercia workshop range. You can add insulation, shelves and electrics more easily than to metal or plastic. See our guide to turning a shed into a garden office before you buy.
- Windy, exposed garden: Prioritise anchoring, a level base, door bracing and the manufacturer's wind information. Biohort publishes a 150 km/h figure with professional assembly and anchoring, but no brand can rescue a building installed on an unsuitable base.
Guarantees and the small print
The common trap is to treat a guarantee length as a lifespan. It is a promise about a defined fault under defined conditions. Timber guarantees often depend on the right treatment before or soon after assembly and then at set intervals. Metal anti-rust guarantees can cover perforation from rust while excluding dents, misuse or altered panels. Plastic warranties commonly depend on following the assembly and maintenance instructions and can exclude modifications, impact and storm damage.
Three failures appear again and again. First, the shed sits directly on wet ground or an uneven base. Second, dip-treated timber is left with its factory coat and never re-treated. Third, the owner changes the building by drilling, painting, cutting panels or moving it without checking the terms. Read the guarantee before you choose a model, save the manual and photograph the base and treatment when you build it. For base planning, compare shed foundation options and timber treatment steps.
Summary
Shire, Mercia and Rowlinson cover most timber jobs, with the exact wall and treatment specification deciding the quality. Yardmaster is the practical metal value choice, while Lotus needs a closer model-by-model check. Palram Canopia, Suncast and Lifetime make sense when low maintenance matters more than easy modification. Buy the base, frame, doors and guarantee conditions as carefully as the brand name.
